Varicose Veins
Varicose veins are prominent or enlarged veins, most commonly seen on the legs and feet. Pressure is often increased in the lower parts of the body due to standing and walking, so veins in the legs are more prone to become varicose.
For most people, unsightly veins are only a cosmetic problem. Sometimes varicose veins are an indication of circulatory problems, and some people may experience pain or more serious health problems as a result.
In most cases there is no pain associated with varicose veins. They appear blue or dark purple and often bulge and protrude outwards on the skin. If pain does occur, it can include sensations like throbbing, burning, or itching around the vein or in the legs.
Minimally invasive procedures allow for the outpatient treatment of varicose veins with relative ease.
If treatment is needed, one of the following procedures will most likely be utilized. Other, less common procedures are available in other cases:
- Sclerotherapy: the injection of a solution into the vein which causes it to clot and close, then fade away.
- Laser treatment: Light energy is used to close off small veins without the use of any needles or incisions.
