Medical Needling/Derma Rolling/Derma Stamping
The renowned South African Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Desmond Fernandes, pioneered medical needling in 1997. Medical needling is also referred to as collagen induction therapy. A similar yet more current process SkinSpeaks employs utilizes a derma roller or derma stamp. The principle is the same: to stimulate the body’s own production of collagen by causing a minute injury to the dermis. To repair itself from injury, the body then produces its own collagen.
It is used to treat a variety of skin imperfections including:
- Scars from most surgeries or injuries
- Scars from chicken pox or picked scabs
- Acne and pock scars on face and body
- Stretch marks from pregnancy or weight loss
- Wrinkles on face, neck, and hands
- Wrinkles around the lips
Results can take three to nine months to fully appear as the body takes time to generate new collagen. The patient, however, sees continual improvement. The procedure takes from ten minutes to over an hour, depending on the area to be treated. Often, Fraxel laser resurfacing can be combined with this treatment for optimal results.
