Botox & Dermal Fillers – What are they, how do they work, and how are they different? #3

In our third and final post for “Botox & Dermal Fillers – What are they, how do they work, and how are they different?” we are going to look at two other types of dermal fillers, Calcium hydroxylapatite and poly-L-lactic-acid-based fillers.

Calcium hydroxylapatite (such as Radiesse) and poly-L-lactic-acid-based fillers (such as Sculptra) stimulate your own body to reproduce collagen to re-volumize your face.  Partial results from these types of fillers are visible right away, however what makes these fillers different than hyaluronic acid fillers is that they continue to work beneath the skin after you leave the office.  The creation of new collagen will continue over several weeks, and results are generally longer lasting, 1 year or more for Radiesse and 2 or more years for Sculptra.

These fillers can be used to treat a variety of concerns, from deeper lines around the mouth to volume loss in the cheeks and hollows in temples.  Results vary, depending on which filler is used to help you to reach your goal.

Botox & Dermal Fillers – What are they, how do they work, and how are they different? #1

Unless you are well versed in the world of cosmetic injections, there can be a lot of confusion surrounding the use of the words Botox and dermal fillers. In this series of three blogs, we will look at the differences between the them and talk about the purposes of each.

Botox and dermal fillers are both popular, non-invasive cosmetic procedures that are performed in the office with little to no down time that can help men and women to look younger, more relaxed and refreshed.

Let’s look at Botox first, then we will get into dermal fillers in upcoming posts.

Botox is a purified protein called Botulinum Toxin Type A that temporarily relaxes over-active muscles.  It is carefully injected into specific muscles of the face and neck to temporarily block the communication between the nerve and muscle.  It does this by preventing the release of acetylcholine at the neuro-muscular junction.  Once the muscle is relaxed, the appearance of creases and wrinkles is greatly improved. Continued treatments can actually help prevent further creasing which gives a more youthful appearance.  Botox results last an average of 3-4 months giving you a more relaxed, refreshed look.

Botox most commonly treats surface lines and wrinkles around the eyes, forehead, brow, upper lip, chin and nose.

Filler Overload

What does it look like? Overtime, filling the same area over and over again, eventually distorts your natural appearance (your look) and facial features become exaggerated and disproportionate. I have heard others refer to this look as lioness, caricature like, and/or trout pout.

Each day looking in the mirror we get fixated on the small imperfections and changes in our face. Eventually, we lose perception of what our base line facial features originally were. Clients are requesting more and more filler and most often indicate right where they want to be injected, but the question is, do they need it? Perhaps it’s the mindset, “If a little is good, more must be better?” These individuals are often times focused on that one wrinkle or those pesky nasal labial folds, fuller cheeks and/or voluptuous lips.

Why does this happen? Maybe it is the lack of understanding of the different fillers or volumizing products vs. product selection. What is the injector’s experience? Not having a good understanding of the aging process and how it relates to volume loss in the face, can lead to incorrect placement or being under /over corrected.

How to avoid? Regardless of the cause, there are so many factors to consider: A thorough assessment and educating the client on where product should be and shouldn’t be placed and why.

The ability to recognize “over correction!” It’s important to consider the rate at which the filler(s) or volumizing product is metabolizing from previous treatments, how products are being layered and the frequency in which they are being injected. Lastly, developing trust in an honest, experienced injection specialist who offers attention to detail and a conservative approach providing natural looking results is key.

Why have a Deramal Filler Treatment

Dermal filler injections are an art, similar to a highly skilled hairdresser or makeup artist.

A natural look is the key to successful treatments and a beautiful end result.

The effects of most dermal fillers are immediate. Dermal filler treatments are quick and normally take only 30-60 minutes. Downtime is minimal and this effective “lunch break treatment” allows you to return to work straight afterwards. Results last between 6-12 months depending on which filler product is used.

Dermal Filler treatment benefits included:

• Plumps, enhances, and redefines lips
• Softens lines between the nose to mouth and or nasolabial folds
• Reduces sad lines between the mouth and chin (commonly referred to as marionette lines)
• Adds and restores volume in cheeks or chin
• Treats tear troughs
• Softens lip lines
• Smooth lines around the eyes
• Redefines and gives shape to recessed chins
• Lifts tired eyebrows to make eyes look more refreshed
• Reshapes your lower jawline to soften jowls
• Treats chin creases
• Improves the appearance of acne or chickenpox scars.
• Make you look less tired and more youthful

Raisin vs Grape

So many times, clients ask about the little fine lines around their lips and are annoyed that their lipstick bleeds and many times wondering why and when this happened.

So, why the RAISIN vs the GRAPE? Well, I often times find myself referring to this analogy. In our youthful years I like to think of our lips as full, soft and smooth, or what I refer to as the GRAPE.

It makes perfect sense….. As we chronologically age, our lips lose volume, the border is less defined, and soon after the annoying little lip lines are there. That’s right! Our lips are behaving like a RAISIN!

By delicately infusing a small amount of Hyaluronic Acid (HA) filler such as JuveDerm Ultra Plus XC or Restylane-L is the key to re-hydrate the RAISIN. Adding back volume and hydration will provide support that will uplift the corners of the mouth resulting in more youthful lips that look naturally fuller with a subtle pout.
