Latisse Now Available in Minneapolis-St. Paul

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

Latisse is FDA approved and available here in Burnsville at Skin Speaks Spa MD.latisseposter-2

What is Latisse? If you haven’t already heard, it’s the latest eyelash enhancer brought to market by Allergan, the medical giant behind Botox and Juvederm.

Applied to the base of the lashes, Latisse keeps hairs in their growth phase, producing longer, darker and thicker eyelashes. The effects of Latisse are not permanent, so you have to keep using it. The eyelashes will return to normal after the patient stops using Latisse.

Allergan accidentally discovered Latisse during a clinical trial for a known glaucoma treatment called Lumigan. When patients reported that Lumigan had a highly desired side-effect – significantly longer eyelashes – Allergan knew they were on to something.

Thermage Inc. Reorganizes Under Solta Medical – Unveils New Website and Logo

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

solta_medlogoThe popular skin-tightening device manufacturer Thermage Inc. has “turned a new page” in medical aesthetics. Their corporate name has been changed to Solta Medical and a new branding style has been created for the Thermage product.

The reorganization follows their recent purchase of California based Fraxel laser manufacturer, Reliant Technologies; a deal that was initiated last year for approximately $87.5 million.

Both brands (fraxel and Thermage) recently launched new, more user-friendly websites which represent a clear departure from their previous ‘clinical’ styles.

A new stock ticker symbol will be recognized as “SLTM” on the Nasdaq.

In a recent press release, President Stephen J. Fanning commented, “the name and ticker symbol changes are a great start to the New Year and a key milestone in the integration of the acquisition of Reliant Technologies Inc.”

1 Million Syringes of Radiesse Dermal Filler Shipped

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

radsyringe2Radiesse and Bioform Medical Inc. recently announced that one million syringes of Radiesse dermal filler have been shipped worldwide since 2002.

Radiesse is Bioform’s most popular product and most commonly used to fill wrinkles, nasolabial folds and restore facial volume.

Radiesse has been marketed for cosmetic and therapeutic use in Europe since 2002.  In 2006 FDA approval for subdermal implantation in aesthetic facial treatments was granted in the United States, expanding Radiesse’ use beyond therapeutic treatments.

At this point, approximately ten-thousand practices have used Radiesse, an achievement that solidifies the company’s position as one of the international market leaders.  The only comparable products with such widespread appeal are fillers composed of collagen or hyaluronic acid, both of which have been on the market longer.

Fraxel – Thermage Merger Completed

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

thermage1In a combined stock and cash deal valued at $66.2 million, Thermage Inc. purchased California based Reliant Technologies.

Reliant has become very popular in the aesthetic surgery market for Fraxel, which we offer in our Burnsville medical spa along with all types of Thermage.

Thermage Inc., which is also out of California, bought the company for approximately 23 million in stock shares, $25 million cash and will assume $7 million of Reliant’s debt.  Shares of Reliant stock have dropped since the deal was made public in July.

Reliant Technologies has been highly profitable, largely due to the effectiveness of Fraxel laser technology.  Fraxel treatments resurface skin and stimulate collagen growth by penetrating the dermis with ‘fractional’ microscopic laser columns.  The body’s natural healing process then promotes skin rejuvenation and collagen building.

Thermage is known for marketing a unique, non-invasive cosmetic treatment that utilizes radiofrequency technology to heat and thus, tighten skin.  The treatment is also said to improve skin tone and texture.

Surgeons and Doctors at Cleveland Clinic Perform Incredible Face Transplant

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

innerfaceA  large group of doctors and surgeons from Cleveland Clinic’s Dermatology and Plastic Surgery Institute have completed the first-ever “80 percent facial transplant” in the United States.

Many details about the patient have been withheld for privacy reasons, but the press release states that the patient had suffered severe facial trauma. Many critical components of the patient’s face were restored.  Surgeons precisely integrated facial structures like the lower eyelids and nose, while also replacing different complex tissues like skin, nerves and arteries.

Dr. Maria Siemionow is the director of plastic surgery research and team leader for the operation.  She has spent a large part of her career researching and developing such a procedure. Dr. Siemionow was able to lead a group of professionals from a variety of areas, including bioethics, surgery, anesthesia, opthamology, dentistry and others.  A cooperative approach of this magnitude is the only way to succeed in such a complex surgical procedure.

“No other aspect of our anatomy is capable of even a fraction of the complexity of motion and emotion allowed by the muscles and tissues of the face” says Siemionow.

In a recent Wall Street Journal article, she describes
her motivation for such difficult work; “Patients with facial disfigurement have very difficult challenges in society. We hope that one day we may be able to help the tens of thousands of patients who are quietly suffering.”
